Has Your attribute of subduing one’s previous wrong-doings become ineffective in this World? or, did Your fame that ‘He will not fail in His word’, say that ‘I am not good enough’? or, O Lord! Did Your grace say that ‘I would not come to protect Your devotees who are not familiar’? or, have all Your powers been expended in protecting the devotees who shone earlier? please let me know.

2. Did Sita – daughter of King Janaka, who is always by Your side tell ‘do not speak’ (to me)? or else, did Lakshmana – one who has conquered sleep, tell very angrily, ‘Why do You bother’? or, did Bharata charmingly fill his eyes with tears of joy (looking at which You forgot about me)? or did Anjaneya – son of vAyu, hold our holy feet swearing saying ‘don’t do it’? please let me know.

3. Did Brahms tell a lie that ‘His devotion is not good enough’? or, did Sarasvati – the goddess of speech, utter many a words that ‘it is not possible for me (to vouch for him)’? or, did this Thyagaraja forget to seat You in his heart? or, did Mother Dharma Samvardhani (name of Parvati at Tiruvaiyaru) who is Your sister, tell ‘don’t go to meet him’? please let me know.

  • 2nE bAga lEdu – Sri Thyagaraja mixes freely the ‘persons’ (first, second and third persons) and also direct and indirect speeches. Therefore, some times it becomes very difficult to derive appropriate meanings. In the present context, it is not clear whether ‘nE’ –‘I’ – refers to the ‘fame’ or to ‘Thyagaraja’? Going by the previous leg of the charana, this should refer to ‘fame’. A similar problem is encountered in charana 3 also – ‘nI bhaktiyu’ - please refer below.
  • 4callani nI bhaktiyu – The word ‘nI’ does not fit into the context. It should be ‘nA’ or ‘vAni’.
