When shall I behold that holy feet which broke the huge bow of Lord Siva? When shall I behold those holy feet which were washed with milk by the King Janaka? 2. When shall I behold those hands which tied Mangala Sutra to Sita with love? When shall I behold those arms which angrily seized the energy of the bow of Parasurama – the son of sage Bhrgu? 3. When shall I behold those hands which, having gone to the forest, slayed Viradha? When shall I behold that hand which, looking at those sages, bestowed on them freedom from fear? 4. When shall I behold that missle which by itself protected the crow demon? When shall I behold that missile which reduced to dust in a moment large numbers of chariots? 5. When shall I behold that arrow which slayed Vali of great strength? When shall I behold that arrow which sub-dued the overweening pride of that Lord of Oceans? 6. When shall I behold those eyes which looked at Vibhishana with kindness? When shall I behold that sight which, having slayed Ravana, cast a benevolent look enabling those humble monkeys (who were killed in the battle) to revive? 7. When shall I behold those eyes which looked at Sugriva – the Lord of forest dwellers coolly with gratitude? When shall I behold those eyes which cast a benevolent look on Lanka so that the country could ever flourish again? 8. When shall I behold that elegance with which You shone in the magnificient heavenly chariot Pushpaka? When shall I behold that spectacle of looking up Bharata and coming holding his hands? 9. When shall I behold that splendour of Your being seated in the golden throne? When shall I behold that decoration of the eminent sages and kings assembled in Your court? 10. When shall I behold well the Lord praised in the treatises and who is the root of Bliss? When shall I expect the arrival of Lord who is the beloved of great devotees and who is ever-changeless? 11. When shall I soonest behold the Lord who reclines in the (milk) ocean and who is the Ocean of Mercy? When shall I behold (the sight of) the manner in which Siva and other blessed celestials extolled You? |

[edit] References
- 1zivuni cApamunu druJcina pAdamunu – As per Srimad-Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda, Chapter 67, the following is the sequence of actions in breaking of the bow – (1) Rama seizes the bow in the middle; (2) strings the bow; (3) bends the bow and it breaks in the middle. Probably, for stringing and bending of the bow, feet is used. In the Kriti ‘zrI rAma raghurAma’ – rAga yadukula kAmbhOji, Sri Thyagaraja states – ‘caraNambu sOka ziva cApambu tapamEmi jEsenO’ – ‘what penances did the bow of Siva perform in order to be touched by the feet of Sri Rama’.
- 3pAla kaDigina – Washing the feet of Rama by King Janaka with milk. Though, there is no such reference in Srimad-Valmiki Ramayana, this is part of Vedic rituals performed during ‘Vara Puja’ before Panigrahana.
- “The Vedic ceremony of marriage only starts at this juncture. After the Oonchal the bride and the groom are taken to the Mantap and the Vedic rituals start. First the bride's father welcomes the groom and washes his feet with water. The groom then starts the vivaha rituals with the permission of the learned Brahmins.” – source - [Vedic Marriage]
- 4cApa balamandukonna – Please refer to Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda, Chapter 76. The bow of Parasurama was bow of Vishnu. According to Padma Purana –
-
ityuktvA dEvi vaiSNavyA zaktyA tadgatayA saha |
jagrAha vaiSNavaM cApaM vinayAna ca lIlayA ||- "Saying so, Sri Rama seized in sport, yet with modesty, the bow of Lord Vishnu along with the divine energy of the same Lord, that had existed in him (Parasu Rama) (so far), O Parvati." ** For more information on the episode, please refer to – [Parasu Rama]
- 7rathamula poDi jEsina – this refers to slaying of the army of Khara – Srimad-Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Chapters 26-30.
- 8vanadhi mada garvamu – According to Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda, Chapter 77, after vanquishing Parasurama, Sri Rama hands entrusts the viSNu bow to Varuna. Therefore, Varuna is fully aware of the prowess of Sri Rama. However, Varuna fails to respond to Sri Rama's entreaties seeking help for crossing over to Lanka. Only then Sri Rama gets annoyed and invokes Brahmastra in order to dry up the ocean. Please refer to Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda, Chapters 21 and 22.
- 9pEda kapulu lEva jUcu – humble monkeys to be revived –In response to Sri Rama's request, Indra revives the monkeys killed and maimed in the battle. Please refer to Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 120.
[edit] Commentary
- 6tanaku tAnE kAkAsuruni kAcina – protected by itself (Himself) - Sri Rama invokes Brahmastra in a blade of grass to destroy Kakasura. However, when the demon surrendered, Sri Rama spared him by taking away one of his eyes.
- 10lEva jUcu – vardhillanu jUcu – Here 'jUcu' does not necessarily mean 'look', but, somewhat similar to 'ensure'. However, as, in both cases, 'eyes' have been specifically mentioned (dRSTi – lOcanamu), it has been translated as 'cast a benevolent look'.
- 13rAka jUcunadi – this may either be translated as 'look as He comes' or 'to expect the arrival'. The latter version is more appropriate in the present context.
- 15tyAgarAja – In the present context, it refers to Lord Siva.
