[edit] Commentary
- 1vagaleruGga – the word ‘vaga’ means ‘method’, ‘pretence’, ‘deception’ etc. In some books, this word ‘deception’ has been attributed to the Lord. However, in my opinion, it should refer to Sri Thyagaraja himself, particularly, in view of the word ‘durAsacE’ - see note below. However, both versions have been given.
- 2iTu – in some books, this word has been translated as 'here'. However, in my opinion, this word would mean 'by this method' of chanting the names of the Lord. This is amplified in the Charana, wherein Sri Thyagaraja clarifies that he does not know other meritorious deeds nor recitation of Vedas. Obviously the Sri Thyagaraja emphasises 'chanting of names' as the only effective method. In the Kriti 'nI bhakti bhAgya sudhA', Sri Thyagaraja enunciates – 'vEdOktambau karmamu veta galgu gatAgatamau' – ' The path of (religious) rites as propounded in Veda results in distressing repeated births and deaths'.
- 4snAna Adi sukarma - The six daily duties of a Brahmana according to the law books, viz., snAna, sandhyAjapa, brahmayajJa, tarpaNa, hOma, dEvapUjA
- The other version of the six duties is: adhyAyana (studying or reciting the Vedas), adhyApana (teaching the Vedas), yajana (offering sacrifices), yAjana (conducting sacrifices for others), dAna (charity), pratigraha (receiving gifts). [Monier Williams' dictionary]
