1. (You have spent) some time much extolling people (every day) since morning for securing welfare in pursuit of three desires - wife, children and wealth; some time eating anywhere and everywherever like a stray cattle and not knowing anything; some time sinking and floating in the ocean of Worldly Existence which appears to be charming; some time indulging foolish chattering with wicked people who have deviated from the path of righteous conduct; O My Mind! It is getting late; chant the names of Lord Sri Rama with determination.

2. (You have spent) some time with pride looking joyously at wealth, children and house; some time remaining miserable being lost in the sea of utter grief brought about thereupon (looking at wealth, children and house with pride); some time self wandering about in the World unable to bear seeing others’ prosperity (in order to acquire similar comforts); some time, during old age, unable to know the direction because of loss of mental faculties due to old age; O My Mind! It is getting late; chant the names of Lord Sri Rama with determination.

3. (You have spent) some time fatigued with the intent of performing Vedic karmas like sacrificial oblations etc; some time committing offences therein (Vedic karmas) due to actions of passion - desire, avarice etc.; some time without understanding that only chanting well the names of Lord is a fortune; some time without knowing the true nature of Lord Sri Rama - praised by this Thyagaraja; O My Mind! It is getting late; chant the names of Lord Sri Rama with determination.

[edit] Commentary

  • 1zOkArNava gatuDai – this could be rendered as ‘zOkArN(a)vagatuDai. But the meaning of ‘avagata’ (being aware) does not seem to be appropriate. Therefore ‘zOkArNava gatuDai’ has been adopted.
  • 2mudi madi tappina vRddha tanamucE – ‘mudi’ means ‘old age’; ‘vRddha tanamu’ - also means ‘old age’. Therefore, there is some difficulty in correctly translating this phrase.
