[edit] Commentary

  • Kshetram: tiruvindaLUr (commonly confused with tErezhundUr).

Tiruvindalur is a suburb of mAyavaram (aka mayilADudurai) on the northern banks of the Cauvery. The deity Parimala Ranganatha (aka sugandha vana nAtha) is in a reclined pose; the consort is Ranganayaki. The sthala purana mentions the king Ambarisha who won the lord's grace through his Ekadasi vrata.

This kshetra is often confused with a nearby one called variously as tiruvazhundUr, tErazhundUr, and tErezhundUr. The deity there is dEvAdirAja (amaruviyappan in Tamil) or gOsakha, who is not reclined as in Tiruvindalur but in a standing posture. The king mentioned in the sthala purANam is Uparisiravasu whose chariot sank (azhundu) in this place because of a curse from the celestials. Tirumangaiyazhwar calls this place "azhundUr".
