1. O Lord of Six Faces! I do not find anywhere a God like You who – (a) that day, while playing, with Your auspicious form, with boys of Your age on the Kailasa mountain, (b) having become angry with Brahma who, on Your questioning, responded fearlessly that he Himself to be the purport of Pranava, (c) by quickly pointing to one warrior among nine warriors, and giving definitive orders to him allotted the powers of projection one by one, (d) to the appreciation of celestials, Vishnu – enemy of Mura, and Siva – enemy of Tri-pura on hearing the same.

2. O Lord of Six Faces! I do not find anywhere a God like You who, (a) being beyond the capacity of Vishnu, Siva, the Lords of Directions, Moon who has digits, Sun, and Vidyadhara, the blessed heroes and others existing in this great Universe (to subdue the arrogance of Soora Padmasura), (b) when (they) joining together, sought Your refuge, (c) hearing their plea and unable to bear, (d) gloriously subdued the arrogance of Soora Padmasura – who is the greatest enemy (of celestials).

3. O Moon Faced! all the lovely beauty found in millions of cupids would be equivalent to the tip of Your nail; O Lord Kumara who implanted in my mind firmly for ever such an auspicious form of Your’s! O Lord of Great Compassion! O Lotus Eyed! O Lord well praised by Lord Siva - who is wearer of Digit of Moon – Lord of Stars! O Lord Well Disposed to those dependent on You!

[edit] Variations

  • 1brahmapuri – In some books, it is taken to mean Sirgazhi in Tamil Nadu. The name of Lord Siva in the temple is Brahmapureesvara - [Sirkazhi]
    • In another book, this is given as ‘Dharmapura’.
  • 7hari harulaku, brahmANDamuna, velayu, jata kUDi – hari harAdulaku, brahmANDamulanu, velasE, jata kUDaka - As the former forms are appropriate, these have been adopted.
  • 9 vIrAdula – vara vIrAdula

[edit] References

  • 3praNavArthamu tAnanu vidhini kOpagiJci – For complete story, you may read Tamizh book ‘ Kanda Puranam’ of Kacchiyappa Sivacharya – prose translated by Ramasami Pulavar. You may also visit the following site and download the e-book ‘Lord Shanmukha and His Worship’ free from there – [Shanmukha]
  • 11kumAra – Paramacharya Chandrasekharendra Saraswati, in the below cited (web) reference, explains this word in the following words – “Manmadhan is also called 'Maran'; and 'Kumaran' some one who puts Mara to shame - is more beautiful than him. 'kutsitha-maraH' - 'kumAraH' ”
    • He has given a beautiful exposition of Dikshitar’s kIrtana ‘zrI subrahmaNyAya namastE’ as told to Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar explaining in detail the story of Subrahmanya – [Subrahmanyaya]

[edit] Commentary

  • 2verapu lEka – this may be applied either to Brahma or to Lord Subrahmanya. As Brahma was telling a lie about the meaning of Pranava, he should have been fearful of the consequences of such utterance. On the otherhand, the audacity with which Lord Subrahmanya imprisoned Brahma and took upon himself the task of Srushti, shows ‘fearlessness’.
  • 4nava vIrulu – Nine chief warriors were also born along with Subrahmanya to help in His war effort. Their names all start with ‘vIra’ – vIra bAhu, vIra kEsari, vIra mahEndra, vIra mahEzvara, vIra purandara, vIra rAkSasa, vIra mArthANDa, vIrAntaka, vIra dhIra.
  • 5mummAru – thrice - Uttering a word thrice makes it a declaration.
  • 6mura purArulu – the word ‘ari’ is common for ‘mura’ and ‘pura’ - murAri (viSNu) - purAri (ziva).
  • 8 vidyAdhara – servants of Lord Siva with magical powers.
  • 10parama drOhi zUra padma – mAya – Mother of Soora Padma – was sent to sage Kasyapa (generator of celestials) by Sukracharya (preceptor of demons) for the sake begetting sons in order to vanquish the celestials. Therefore, Soora Padma is considered as born enemy (parama drOhi) of celestials.
  • 12tyAgarAja – In this kRti, this refers to Lord Siva – name of the Lord at Thiruvarur.
