1. Having governed me all these days by – (a) seeing my - a youngster – plight, giving me courage to continue to bear (my troubles), (b) being playful with me in order to relieve my grief, and further, (c) looking at me with side glance as if to tell that “it is advisable this way for you”, why this ridicule (now)?

2. Where did You go, who said earlier that ‘I will come along wherever you go’? O Most charming Lord! If You are true to Your word, may You support me in front of all.


3. O Consort of Janaki! I am indeed not beseeching You on the sly or superficially or casually so that I would be deceived (OR You would forget); Only You being the peerless company, O Saviour from misfortunes who does not fail having given word! You having governed me all these days, why this ridicule now?

4. Having protected me in one form, deceiving me in another form and, in yet another form, You have been watching (my suffering); but O Lord who bestows comfort! is there not even a little goodness (or governance)! O Blemish-less Lord! O Lord whose feet are worshipped by this Thyagaraja!

  • 3krI-kaNTa – This actually means ‘downcast glance’ – ‘dejection’. However, in the present context, as it is not ‘dejection’ which is meant, it has been translated as ‘side glance’. In many Kritis, ‘krI-kannu’ and ‘krE-kannu’ are used interchangeably.
  • 4lEdugAvEmArulaku – The letter ‘v’ may be taken as sandhi (lEdugA+EmArulaku) or the word may be taken as ‘vEmArulaku’ – meaning ‘thousand times’. However, in the present context, such a meaning does not seem to be appropriate.
  • 5EmArulaku – This can be interpreted in two ways – ‘to be deceived’ (applied to Sri Thyagaraja) and ‘to forget’ (applied to the Lord). Both meanings are given.
  • 6brOci – Eci – jUcucu – It seems that Sri Thyagaraja is considering all those, who are protecting him, deceiving him and watching his suffering, to be Sri Rama Himself in different forms.
  • 7Eci – jUcucu – In some books, this has been translated as ‘You delegated the power to create, sustain and destroy to the Trinity’. There are no such words in the kriti.
