O Mother Srimathi –(name of Mother at the temple) – the mighty One in prosperity! having searched much in my mind, I whole-heartedly and completely believed in Your holy feet only; deign to protect now; I came here seeking that You are the refuge for true devotees; why do You show unconcern?

1. O Mother of Supreme Bliss abiding in the most sacred town of Sri Tapasteerthapuri! is it possible even for Brahma to extol You? In the World I do not find equal to You; am I not Your’s, O Mother? The heads of the beautiful town, joining together, are waiting on You, firmed up in the minds that, in order to get rid of all sufferings, You are the only Goddess who bestows desired boons; therefore, I came here seeking that You are my refuge; why do You show unconcern?

2. I wonder as to what merit was earned by those who nicely live with family in this town, O Mother, resident of Sripura! I have sought Your refuge, O Mother! I shall not beseech others; please do not look at me superficially; only You are my refuge and support; otherwise, who else is there for me? Your glory is as high as the temple tower; therefore please do not dilly-dally, O Benevolent Mother!

3. O Full-Moon Faced! O Head of all Worlds! O Mother who is the source for even Gods who appeal to You ‘Please Listen to us’; now that I have become single minded due to Your grace, why You are not showing compassion on me even now? Though beseeching these people every time, for money and food articles required for Your (worship) sake, is demeaning to Your fame, how long shall I keep on appealing to You? I came here seeking that You are the refuge of this Thyagaraja; why do You show unconcern?

[edit] Variations

  • 2raka pura nAthula – This is how it is given in all the books. However, from the flow of the language, it appears that it should be ‘nAthulu’ and not ‘nAthula’.
  • 3nIvani manu sthira matulai – nIvanumanu sthira matulai’.
  • 4jUpu jUpu – jUpu jAgu
  • 5sarva lOka nayaki – sarva lOka nAyikE
  • 6vinnavintu – vinnapintu
